The Brazilian Tax Authorities, together with the Brazilian government’s data system organization SERPRO, have chosen Algorithmic Research’s Private Wire encryption and firewall protection system for tax returns via the Internet. Some 2.5 million Brazilian tax payers are initially expected to use the system, which was chosen last month following an international tender.
Algorithmic Research’s representatives in Brazil, CryptoSystems, together with the tax authorities and SEPRPO developed the client-server application, using PrivateWire, which was introduced onto the market in September 1997. The system combines encryption with firewall and smart card capabilities for secure e-trading, is used by Koor and Bank Leumi in Israel, and other companies worldwide.
According to CryptoSystems CEO Carlos Viceconti, the tax project will not only safeguard tax returns on the Web from prying eyes, but is also far less time-consuming than the outdated method of filling in forms.
The PrivateWire program will be incorporated into the Brazilian tax authorities data systems, and users will receive a digital code after filing their annual returns, confirming safe receipt.
Algorithmic Research, a wholly owned subsidiary of NASDAQ-traded US Cylink Corporation, provides encryption-based network security solutions and wireless communications.
