Attorney-General Elyakim Rubinstein: The Knesset’s approval is not required.
The government today unanimously approved the appointment of Ariel Sharon as Minister for Foreign Affairs.
Attorney-General Elyakim Rubinstein said all relevant legal opinions determine that there is no need to bring the appointment before the Knesset for approval.
Cabinet ministers congratulated Ariel Sharon on the appointment, and Minister Shaul Yahalom added: "I hope you will put your views into practise in negotiations with the Palestinians".
Knesset chairman Dan Tichon expects the government to serve the Knesset with a written or oral announcement of the appointment, in line with past custom.
