Cellcom Obtains Communications Ministry Approval to Test Future High Frequency Cellular System

Cellcom has obtained Ministry of Communications approval for trials of a cellular system that works at the 1,900 MHz frequency range on the same technology as used by the Cellcom network (TDMA-IS136).

Worldwide, this system is known as PCS (Personal Communications Services), and it is particularly widespread in the US and Canada. Cellcom claims that it already provides personal communications services, and that the 1,900 MHz system is the same system on a different frequency.

Ministry of Communications approval was given four months ago, but this has not been disclosed until now. Cellcom added 1,900 MHz antennas and radio equipment to several of its Tel Aviv area sites, including the Exhibition Grounds area, and began the trial two weeks ago. It has been demonstrating its capabilities at the Telecom ’98 exhibition taking place this week.
