Chief of Staff Requests to Serve Another Year; "Syrians Arrayed for War"

CGS Amnon Lipkin-Shahaq warns that Iran is developing a missile with a range of 1,300 km. He also believes that Hamas is likely to renew terrorist activity within Israel.

CGS Amnon Lipkin-Shahaq requested that his tour of duty be extended for another year. The chief of staff, appearing before the Knesset Committee for Defense and Foreign Affairs, expressed his wish to serve a fourth year. At the end of December, he will complete his third year. In the past months, various assessments circulated concerning his future. At first, the assessment was that he would request to complete his third year and leave the IDF; lately the possibility arose of extending his tour of duty by six months, to cover Israel’s 50th Independence Day celebrations.

CGS Amnon Lipkin-Shahaq gave the committee members an exhaustive review of the security situation. He too claimed that IDF preparedness for war has been damaged due to erosion of the security budget.

He also warned that the Syrians are deployed for an offensive war, and that Iran is developing a missile with a range of 1,300 km., capable of hitting targets inside Israel.

According to him, Hamas is likely to renew terrorist activity inside Israel, in contrast to assessments publicized in recent months.
