The number of tourists arriving from abroad rose by approximately
12%, and there was a similar rise in the number of Israelis traveling
abroad.
34 of the 40 organized foreign airlines affecting flights to Israel
recorded growth in activity in 1995. Four new airlines began service to
Israel during the past year: Korean Air, J.A.TH., World Airways, and
Air Canada. The US firm Delta Airlines ceased services to and from
Israel in September of this year.
El Al and the Israeli charter companies, Sun Dor and Arkia, recorded
greater than average growth, El Al reporting 18% growth and Sun Dor and
Arkia together reporting 23% growth in activity. The joint market
sector of the three Israeli airlines in the commercial flight market in
Israel grew in 1995 and reached 46.8%.
El Al was the leading airline in the Israeli market in 1995. It took
41.1% of the market, growing 18% over the previous year. El Al flew 2.8
million passengers in and out of Israel on 14,520 flights. The US
airline T.W.A. placed second with 278,000 passengers, on 1,015 flights
which represented 4.1% of the market, a 7% growth over their '94
statistics
