Elscint-GE Nuclear Medicine Plant Inaugurated in Tirat Hacarmel

ELGEMS will manufacture medical imaging cameras at an annual $120 million.

Elscint and General Electric inaugurated a new plant, ELGEMS, in Tirat Hacarmel at the weekend. The plant is engaged in developing and manufacturing gamma-cameras for isotope imaging, which diagnoses functioning of organs. The plant employs 140 workers, half of them in development and half in manufacture, marketing and customer support.

The plant was set up as part of a joint venture the parties signed in the middle of ’97, when it was decided to set up the two companies’ worldwide development and manufacturing center in Israel.

General Electric’s involvement in the joint venture is conducted through its subsidiary, General Electric Medical Systems. Elscint and General Electric consolidated their activities in nuclear medicine, and General Electric accordingly transferred to Israel all its development and manufacturing activities.

The new plant stretches over 5,000 sq.m. and is located at the entrance to the Tirat Hacarmel industrial zone. The joint company’s manufacturing capacity is an annual $120 million.

In the first half of the year General Electric purchased the Diasonic company, engaged in developing and manufacturing ultra-sound products, from Elbit. The company is expected to shortly complete acquisition of Elscint’s MRI and nuclear medicine activities.
