Exclusive: List of Jewish-held Accounts Forwarded to Swiss Bank Corp's NY Branch

The Foreign Currency Control Division of the US Treasury Department has traced, at a New York branch of Swiss Bank Corporation, hundreds of deposits placed by foreign nationals, several dozen of whom have either patently or possibly Jewish names. This is revealed by an US Department of Treasury Report dated October 1940, published here for the first time.

The report was prepared as part of a follow-up of the assets of foreign nationals in the United States, at a time when the property of subjects of Germany and her allies, and of occupied European countries was being frozen. Altogether, deposits in a nominal volume of $14.5 million were traced (amounting to $160 million in real values). Of that amount, about one million dollars (or $11 million in real values), was deposited by persons with Jewish names.

The size of the accounts ranged from a few dollars to tens of thousands of dollars. The small accounts probably resulted from withdrawals, or from interest being collected from customers with whom contact was severed because of the war in Europe. The most outstanding name on the list is that of Baron Maurice Rothschild of France, in whose account there remained $98,492.70, or about one million dollars in real terms.

The following is a partial list of deposits bearing distinctly or possibly Jewish names, along with the nominal amount credited to them as of October 1940. The real amount is about 11 times the size of the nominal. Appearing in parentheses is the citizenship of the deposit holder, unless recorded as "unknown"; those having no citizenship are refugees. A considerable portion of the deposits was made via a third country, primarily Switzerland, the United States or South American states.
