Minister of Communications Limor Livnat has adopted a relevant recommendation by the committee for the promotion of Internet services.
Internet service providers can connect directly to an international communications backbone abroad, with no need for mediation by international companies Bezeq International, Barak and Golden Lines. This was decided by Minister of Communications Limor Livnat today who adopted recommendations of the committee for promotion of Internet in Israel.
The committee’s role is to examine the measures which can be taken by the Ministry, with the aim of increasing Internet penetration in Israel. Among other things, the committee recommended that licenses for the provision of Internet services be granted to companies which possess a general license to provide telecom services (with a stipulation relating to Bezeq). The committee recommended granting Internet service providers access to rapid access and rapid connectivity junctions, including connectivity to the Internet backbone abroad.
Other decisions include: to examine the determining of principles for setting e-mail addresses, to enable surfers to switch from one provider to another without changing their e-mail addresses; and to increase the infrastructure and competition in international telecommunications services.
