Introducing: The Committee of Inquiry

The committee of inquiry to examine the Meshal affair consists of three members. Who are they and how close are they to the prime minister?

Joseph Ciechanover

Ciechanover is chairman of the board of El Al, the national airline. He served as legal counsel to the late Minister of Defense Moshe Dayan. He was later promoted to the position of director-general of the Ministry of Defense, also under Dayan.

After leaving government service, Ciechanover managed Discount Bank's US investment company and when the bank's chairmanship opened up, he filled the position for eight years. In 1995, he landed at El Al, and he also manages billionaire Edgar Bronfman's Challenge investment fund.

It is important to note:
Ciechanover is dependent on the Prime Minister's Office, which is scheduled to decide soon on his continued tenure as the chairman of El Al's board of directors.

Nahum Admoni

Admoni is a former chief of the Mossad. He served in the agency for 35 years, six and half as its head. He worked as the agency's head with the late Prime Minister Menachem Begin, as well as with Shimon Peres and Yitzhak Shamir during their terms as prime minister. He retired in 1989, and was appointed general manager of Mekorot, the national water company. He later retired from this position and established a financial consulting firm.

It is important to note:
Admoni is one of the few in the Israeli intelligence community who defended Netanyahu after the failed assassination attempt against Khaled Meshal in Jordan.

Rafi Peled

Peled is the general manager of Israel Electric Company. Peled served previously as the national Chief of Police, but survived just one year on the job. High Court of Justice petitions were filed against him concerning discounts he received from hotels. Peled has served in his current position since the end of 1994.

It is important to note:
Peled, as general manager of IEC, has a close working relationship wit Minister of National Infrastructures Ariel Sharon. Sharon, the man who succeeded in bringing the two Mossad agents back to Israel, is becoming more and more central in the Netanyahu government. During the press conference in which Netanyahu announced the establishment of the committee of inquiry, Sharon sat to his right. Minister of Defense Yitahak Mordechai only got to sit at Netanyahu's left.
