Senior defence source: Scope of defence deals between the two countries is about to expand significantly.
Israel and Jordan have recently signed several deals for the supply of military systems and equipment from Israeli defence firms to the Jordanian army. Delivery of the systems has already begun. Expansion of security and military ties between Israel and Jordan is today being discussed in Amman between Minister of Defence Yitzhak Mordechai and Jordanian prime minister Abd al-Karim Kabariti and the acting Jordanian chief-of-staff.
Israeli defence firms have supplied the Jordanian army with mine detection systems developed with Israeli know-how. The systems have already been used in the joint Israeli-Jordanian operation to locate and disarm mines in the Jordan valley. Jordan has also been supplied with flak jackets by an Israeli company for protection against shrapnel and terrorist bombs. The jackets are for mine disposal units.
The bulk of Israeli supplies to the Jordanian army have to do with night-vision. Israeli companies have supplied Israeli developed night-vision telescopes. Israeli companies have carried out an enhancement programme for Jordanian night-vision equipment of British origin, substantially improving its power and its detection capability. The night vision equipment has also been delivered and is now operational.
A senior defence source told "Globes" that the scale of supply of the systems and materiel from Israel to Jordan is about to increase significantly. He said that Jordan is pleased with Israel’s capabilities in this area, and positive reports had been received about the systems.
