Ornet Presents Ethernet Switches to Solve Network Bandwidth Limitations

The new ATM-compatible LANbooster switches use new modules that add 100 megabyte per second capability and will have 155 Mbps ATM capability by the first quarter of 1997.

Ornet, of the Siemens Group, has released two new products; the LANbooster 3600, a workgroup communications switch, and the Lanbooster 5600Enterprise Switch, a network communications switch. The new switches broaden Ornet's line of products, and solve the problem of communications network bandwidth, by ensuring data transmissions rates of 100%, independent of the load on the network.

The new ATM-compatible switches use new modules that add 100 megabyte per second capability and will have 155 Mbps ATM capability by the first quarter of 1997. LANbooster switches feature MetaSwitching, a data loss-free technology that gives users network performance beyond that offered by other switches. The new modules for the LANbooster give users flexibility in constructing their networks. The modules allow users to choose from several different port configurations based on the needs of their specific networks.

In addition to port configuration choices, extensive Virtual LAN support is included in the LANbooster. Virtual LANs (VLANs) are created by grouping multiple switch ports together to form workgroups, simplifying the structure of a network. With the LANbooster, it is possible to create multiple VLANs enabling support for multiple workgroups within each switch.

Ornet, part of the German Siemens group, develops, produces and markets switching technologies and LAN communcations products. The company was founded in 1993 and in September 1995 was acquired by Siemens. Ornet is located in Carmiel and employs 100 persons. The company is managed by its two founders.
