Following a long phase-in process, the Phoenix insurance group
shifted to its new open system, from proprietary Data General computers,
to open Aviion workstation UNIX systems
The system uses the Oracle database and locally developed
applications, for elementary insurance. Phoenix has also transported the
life insurance system to the UNIX systems, and these applications will
soon enter operational use. Currently, the group consumes 650 gigabyte
of disks, mostly Clarion disk arrays, and it plans to upgrade the system
to one terrabyte by year's end.
Phoenix also announced an NIS 8 million ($2.4 million) acquisition
from Data General , for a new main processor, an MV/60000, to upgrade
its computer center processing capability to support the new systems.
Phoenix Insurance Group is one of Israel's largest insurance companies.
Among the group's members are the Phoenix, Dolev, La-Nacional and Hadar
insurance companies.
Under a separate program, Eliahu Insurance has also shifted its
systems to UNIX. Under this program, valued at $200,000, the company
moved from proprietary DG environment to open systems, based on Aviion,
servers and the Oracle database. The transition process took advantage
of the new migration tools provided by Adapt Technologies and provided
an opportunity for Alon Software Systems, to tune their elementary
insurance packages from DG to the open UNIX environment. According to
initial responses, the new system is 50% more responsive and effective,
compared to past performance.
