Judge Prof. Yitzhak Zamir is a Supreme Court judge, and Prof. Yitzhak Englander a Supreme Court candidate.
Judge Prof. Yitzhak Zamir and Prof. Yitzhak Englander are the winners of the Israel Juridical Research Award. The announcement came today (Wednesday) from the Ministry of Education & Culture. The awards will be made on the evening of Independence Day.
Zamir, a former Attorney General, resigned over the Bus No. 300 affair, in which he opposed a pardon for the General Security Service officers involved in the murder of the terrorists and in fabricating evidence. Zamir taught at the Hebrew University’s Faculty of Law and was the founder and first dean of the law faculty at Haifa University. He was appointed Supreme Court judge in 1994.
The adjudication committee says "Zamir made a preponderant contribution to the development of public law in Israel. He also contributed most significantly, in the various offices he filled, and especially as Attorney General, to bolstering the rule of law in Israel".
Englander lectures at the Law Faculty of the Hebrew University, and served as dean of the faculty. He was also a guest professor at the universities of Rome, Zurich, Yale and Grenoble, and is a member of the National Academy of Sciences. Englander is presently one of the foremost candidates for the "religious seat" on the Supreme Court bench.
