Tel Aviv District Planners Recommend that Sde Dov and Herzliya Airports Be Rolled Back, Not Evacuated

Further recommendations: permission for previously banned hotel construction on the beach; Jaffa port project should be scrapped.

The national plan for the country’s beaches, which imposes severe restrictions on construction, should be modified, so as to meet the needs of the Tel Aviv district. This is the recommendation of the Tel Aviv District Plan team, led by architect Rafi Lerman. Highlights of the plan were disclosed for the first time today, in the course of a study day.

Ministry of the Interior’s Planning Administration director Dina Rachevsky said that the intention is to allow the construction of hotel projects on beach plots where the national plan for beaches forbids such construction. According to Rachevsky, the national tourism plan team presented a similar recommendation.

The vague wording of the policy document does not make it clear whether construction for housing will be allowed on the beach. Rachevsky told "Globes" that the intention is to allow construction for housing only where necessary.

The authors of the plan do not recommend that the Sde Dov and Herzliya airports be evacuated, only rolled back. In the past, members of the planning team made comments in favor of evacuating Sde Dov. The team also recommends conserving Jaffa port. This recommendation runs counter to the Israel Lands Administration’s plan to privatize Jaffa port plots for the purpose of massive construction. The Tel Aviv municipality is also opposed to the Israel Lands Administration’s plans.
