Israel Has 6.145 Mln Population at Start of Jewish Year 5760

Of the total population, 79% are Jews and 15% Muslims.

At the Jewish New Year 5760, the population of Israel stands at 6,145,000, of whom 79%, or 4,847,000 are Jews, 15% or 922,000 are Muslims, and 6% or 376,000 are Druze, Christians and persons whose religion is not specified in the Population Register. These figures were released today by the Central Bureau of Statistics.

Last year (5759) the population of the State of Israel increased by approximately 147,000 souls. Population increase in that year stood at 2.4%, similar to the preceding year.

The share of the migration balance in total population increase last year came to 35% compared to 34% in the preceding year.

The Jewish population increased by 1.8% in the past year by 88,000, similar to the year before. Some 61% of the population growth resulted from natural increase (number of births net of number of deaths). In 5759, 63,500 immigrants arrived in Israel, 86% of them from countries of the former Soviet Union.
