The suspicions relate to MK Meir Porush's term of office as Deputy Minister of Construction and Housing, in 1995-99.
The police recommend bringing MK Meir Porush (Torah Judaism) to trial on suspicion of the offences of fraud, breach of trust and an offence against the Privacy Protection Law. The suspicions relate to MK Meir Porush's term of office as Deputy Minister of Construction and Housing, in 1995-99.
Porush is suspected of having collected, while serving in that capacity, personal details on hundreds of citizens who applied to the Ministry of Housing with requests for assistance. Porush passed the details on to his personal assistant, instructing him to ask the needy applicants to reward the assistance they would be given by acting on behalf of the success of Torah Judaism in last year's Knesset elections.
An investigation of the case gives rise to the suspicion that hundreds of letters signed by Porush were sent out, shortly before the April 1999 Knesset elections. In these letters, Porush recalled the Ministry of Housing's achievements in assisting those in need of housing, before asking them to vote for Torah Judaism. He also asked them to make their apartments available for the use of the party's elections HQ.
