Israel, Palestinians agree cease-fire at Sharm al-Sheikh

Clinton: Consulations in next two weeks over renewing peace negotiations. I will appoint a committee to investigate the disturbances.

The summit at Sharm al-Sheikh intended to put an end to the violent disturbances in the territories has apparently ended in success. In his statement at the close of the meeting, at which the participants included President Bill Clinton, Israel's Prime Minister Ehud Barak, Palestinian Authority chairman Yasser Arafat, and Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, Clinton said the Israelis and Palestinians had agreed to end violence and incitement; to restore the situation what it was before violence started, including redeployment of Israeli troops and removal of the closure on territories; and to consult with US in the next two weeks over renewal of peace negotiations.

A committee is to be appointed by President Clinton and the UN Secretary General to report on the disturbances.
