Court sentences Shimon Sheves to 2 years in prison

Former Prime Minister's Office director-general Shimon Sheves was convicted of an attempt to receive a bribe and breach of trust. He was acquitted on charges of actually receiving a bribe and obstruction of justice. Sheves is to appeal.

The Tel Aviv District Court sentenced Shimon Sheves to two years in prison and one year suspended. Sheves was director-general of the Prime Minister’s office during the late Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin’s term in office.

Sheves was convicted of an attempt to receive a bribe from businessman Moshe Stern, after trying to help him do business with Taiwan, in order to win a $5-10 million commission.

Sheves was acquitted on the charge of actually accepting a bribe in the matter, but was convicted of attempting to receive one and of breach of trust. Sheves was also acquitted on two additional charges of obstruction of justice and taking bribes.

Following the Tel Aviv District Court’s sentence, Sheves announced his intention of appealing. The judge granted his request for a stay of sentence.
