David Hermelin, recognized nationally and internationally as a prominent businessman, philanthropist and volunteer, passed away last week. He was 64. Eleven years ago, Hermelin took control of Phoenicia American-Israel Flat Glass from the Koor concern, together with US businessman Bill Davidson.
In 1992, Phoenicia owners invested $100 million in relocating the company’s plant from Haifa to the Zippori industrial zone near upper Nazereth.
Current president and chairman of Phoenicia Oded Tira is also president of the Manufacturers Association.
In 1997, Hermelin was appointed by US President Bill Clinton as US Ambassador to Norway. As a result of the appointment, Hermelin resigned as chairman of Phoenicia.
Prior to his demise, Hermelin also served as president emeritus of the World ORT Union and international chairman of State of Israel Bonds. In 1998, Hermelin received the Prime Minister’s businessmen’s award for his investments in Israel.
He leaves a wife, five children and five grandchildren. His son, Brian Hermelin serves as a director on the Phoenicia board of directors.
