Ports Authority may approve new Haifa port

The port would be instead of an additional port at Ashdod. The cost is estimated at over NIS 1 billion.

The Ports and Railways Authority board is discussing the approval of a new port at Haifa, at an investment of over NIS 1 billion. It had been widely thought up to now that the Authority would give preference to an additional new port at Ashdod, rather than a new port at Haifa - the “Carmel Port”.

Pressure from Haifa mayor Amram Mitzna and several Haifa based directors on the Authority board led to the matter being reopened. It is now estimated that it will probably be decided to build the Carmel Port.

No final decision will be made today. This will come at the board’s next meeting. Nor will the board decide at this stage on the method of building and operating the new Haifa port. This will depend on the outcome of talks with workers committees on the building and operating method for the Jubilee Port. Published by Israel's Business Arena on December 28, 2000
