Surprising NIS 1.74 billion government surplus in February

The government received US economic aid totaling NIS 2.6 billion ($570 million) as well as receipts amounting to NIS 850 million from the Israel Ports and Railways Authority and mobile phone operators.

Israeli government activities yielded a budget surplus of NIS 1.74 billion (excluding net credit granted) in February of 2002, according to preliminary calculations announced today by the Ministry of Finance Accountant General. The figure for February follows a similar surplus in January.

The month of February was characterized by high government expenditures, which resulted from approval of the 2002 budget and from settlement of spending for January. At the same time, the government received US economic aid totaling NIS 2.6 billion ($570 million) as well as receipts amounting to NIS 850 million from the Israel Ports and Railways Authority and mobile phone operators.

A government domestic deficit of NIS 889 million was recorded in February. Including net credit granted, the deficit was NIS 842 million.

A surplus of NIS 2.63 billion was recorded in February from Israeli government activities overseas.
