US supermarket Hannaford buys Retalix POS solution

Retalix: The deal is revolutionary because the StoreLine system was provided on a Linux OS.

Retalix (Nasdaq: RTLX) today announced that a a US supermarket had taken the revolutionary step of implementing its point of sale solution with a Linux-based operating system.

Retalix said its StoreLine system was installed in the Standish, Maine branch of the Hannaford Bros. Co. supermarket chain, which runs 119 stores throughout the Northeast United States. Hannaford Bros. Co. is a wholly owned subsidiary of Delhaize America, Inc.

According to Retalix, the Hannaford chain had been searching for an open, flexible application that would fit their requirements for a no moving parts, Linux-based point of sale.

Hannaford senior vice president and chief information officer Bill Homa said, “Not only did Retalix understand our desire to dramatically lower the cost of ownership, but they were able to achieve this using their standard StoreLine application.”

“The result is that all of operating companies within the Delhaize Group, using a common code base of StoreLine, will have the freedom to choose between a Microsoft Windows or Linux operating system, while maintaining consistent functionality and promotions globally," he added.

Retalix shares closed on Nasdaq on Tuesday at $9.16.
