Comverse announces MMS, access servers deal with KG Telecom of Taiwan

The deal is estimated at several million dollars.

Comverse, a subsidiary of Comverse Technology(Nasdaq:CMVT), today announced that Taiwanese wireless operator KG Telecommunication (KGT) had chosen Comverse’s multimedia messaging service (MMS) system and media server to provide its i-mode-compatible MMS for mobile Internet. Comverse provides software and hardware systems for multimedia services over telecommunications networks.

As of June 30, 2003, KGT was the fourth largest operator in Taiwan, with a 13.6% share of the wireless telecommunications market, and 3.42 million subscribers. In other words, KGT is not a Tier-1 or Tier-2 operator, and the deal is probably not worth more than a few million dollars. At the same time, the deal itself is important, since it constitutes an additional sale of the former eXalink WAP-2 access server, and an MMS system.

”Comverse’s MMS system supports a variety of texts in Chinese, and enables Internet users to send e-mail to mobile telephones,” said KG Telecommunications VP network engineering and operation Jeffey Gee.

Founded in 1977, KGT provides telecommunications services in Taiwan. In December 1997, the company obtained a license to provide GSM1800 wireless services in Taiwan. In June 2002, KGT launched i-mode services, as part of its vision to become the leading provider Chinese-language telecommunications services.
