Motorola Israel to provide Serbia with $21m ID system

The system includes fingerprint identification, facial and photo imaging and fingerprint / palmprint scanning.

Motorola Israel announced this week that, along with Vlatacom Ltd., its distributor to Serbia, it has begun the deployment of a nationwide integrated identification system for the Republic of Serbia. Under a contract valued at $21 million, the system will include Motorola's Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS), facial and photo imaging and livescan fingerprint and palmprint scanning technologies. The system will be used for criminal and civil identification purposes.

All identification (ID) applications will contain a fingerprint and facial image of the applicants, which will be logged electronically in the system's database for record and document generation and identity verification.

The integrated identification system includes civil and criminal subsystems and will utilize Motorola's Omnitrak AFIS/Palmprint Identification Technology and facial matching technology from Identix, Inc.

The solution will include a fingerprint database that will encompass 1.5 million criminal records and 10 million civil records.

"This system will enable us to quickly and accurately identify subjects electronically," said Dusan Mihajlovic, Minister of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Serbia. "The new identification technology from Motorola will save the Republic of Serbia valuable time and resources while enhancing the public safety environment and providing better service for the citizens of Serbia."

The agreement for strategic cooperation between Motorola Israel and Serbia's Ministry of Internal Affairs was signed during Mihajlovic's visit to Israel.

The Republic of Serbia's integrated identification system is scheduled for installation before the end of 2003 and will be a part of identification document generation and identification verification shared by Serbia's various government agencies. Motorola said that Phase II plans include the possible addition of passport identification applications.

"This project is an important additional milestone in Motorola's support for customers' requirements for public safety and security systems, and it further solidifies our on-going cooperation with the Serbian Ministry of Interior," said Nathan Gidron, Motorola, Inc., VP and joint general manager Motorola Communications, Motorola Israel Ltd.
