Vyyo Inc. (Nasdaq: VYYO), supplier of wireless broadband end-to-end solutions for wireless telephony and high-speed data connections, today announced that China Unicom (NYSE: CHU), the second largest cellular operator in China, has deployed Vyyo's E1 circuit switched products to drive its broadband wireless access (BWA) in two provinces.
Wuhan Research Institute (WRI) served as the system integrator in Changchun, Jilin. Shanghai Datang Mobile Communications Equipment served as the system integrator in Guiyang, Guizhou.
"Vyyo's goal to penetrate China's BWA market is coming to fruition," said Michael Corwin, president and chief operating officer of Vyyo. "We now serve four large telecommunications operators in China -- China Unicom, China Netcom, China Mobile, ChinaComm and our reach extends into 11 provinces with 3.5Ghz frequency licenses."
Vyyo provides a multi-service platform which delivers high-speed Internet protocol (IP) data, plain old telephone service (POTS) and E1 services across a single vendor platform and radio frequency infrastructure. The multi-service platform serves voice cafes and cellular backhaul applications while also offering IP services to businesses and Internet cafes.
Changchun, located northeast of Beijing, is the capital city of Jilin province and a regional center of economy, culture, education and transportation. It has China's largest motor vehicle plant and its biggest film studio. Jilin is home to 26 million people.
Guiyang, the capital of Guizhou Province, has an area of 2,406 square km. and a population of 1.56 million. Guiyang is a major source of China's production of nonferrous metals and tobacco and serves as a hub of railways in the southwest of China.
China United Telecommunications Corporation (China Unicom), a state-owned corporation, was formed in 1994. Unicom is the only Chinese company with stock traded in China (ticker: 600050), Hong Kong (ticker: 1726) and the US. Unicom is the Chinese operator that provides a full range of services, including cell phone, toll, international, VoIP, data, Internet and paging. It was the first Chinese operator to launch GSM cell phone service in the country and has built a network with over 100 million-line capacity (CDMA: 35 million lines). Besides cell phone service, Unicom operates 480,000 kms of optical cable network which covers all major cities in 30 provinces.
WRI is a comprehensive application science and research organization engaged in fiber-optic communication and affiliated directly with Ministry of Information Industry of China. WRI is the research and development base of fiber optic communication technology in China.
Shanghai Datang Mobile Communications Equipment Co., Ltd. (SDTM) is a subsidiary company of Datang Telecom Technology Industry Group, one of the largest telecom equipment providers in China. SDTM was established in April 1998.
