Minister of Finance Benjamin Netanyahu has consented to Minister of Defense Shaul Mofaz's demand to appoint Avigdor Kahalani as chairman of Israel Aircraft Industries (IAI). Netanyahu had wanted to appoint former minister Moshe Arens, who has a degree in aeronautics, to the post.
Kahalani, a brigadier general in the IDF reserves, was active in the Labor and Center parties. He has served as Minister of Public Security, among other posts, and was indicted in the Ofer Nimrodi affair, but found not guilty.
IAI has lacked a chairman for a considerable time, since Ori Orr's term expired. If Netanyahu still wants to appoint Arens to a post in a government company, the only ones available are chairman of Amidar, or chairman of either the new Haifa or Ashdod port companies to be established.
