The Israel Prison Service Massada counter-terrorism unit will be the first operational unit in the world to use Israel Military Industries' (IMI) new TAR-21 Tavor assault rifle.
The Prison Service will procure 60 Tavor rifles at $1,500 each. The first rifle will be delivered to Prison Service Commissioner Police Major General Yaakov Ganot.
The Tavor rifle will enter operational service with IDF infantry units this year, after the Ministry of Defense bought 15,000 rifles. The Indian Army has also bought several thousand rifles, and IMI is offering the Tavor in tenders by other armies.
IMI Light Arms Division, which manufactures the Tavor, was sold two months ago to General Defense and Technologies, which will continue production of the rifle.
