Preservation Society wants old Knesset building preserved

Three bills call for converting Froumine House into a museum of the Knesset and center for teaching democracy and governance.

Jerusalem's Froumine House, the first Knesset premises, should be listed as a national asset worthy of preservation, and not demolished, said Society for the Preservation of Historical Sites director Yossi Feldman last week.

The Knesset was based in Froumine House, on King George St., Jerusalem, between 1950 and 1966. After the Knesset moved to its current premises, the Ministry of Tourism used the building. The land was sold to a private contractor, Ilan Rejwan, for NIS 10 million. Rejwan plans to build a 16-storey residential and commercial building on the site.

Following strong objections to the plan, MK Ran Cohen (Meretz), MK Ilan Shalgi (Shinui) and MK Nissan Slomiansky (National Religious Party) submitted three bills to convert Froumine House into a museum of the Knesset and center for teaching democracy and governance.
