IBM to install new NIS 18m computer system for Defense Ministry

The project, slated for completion in early 2007, will include designing the system, installing it, integrating it with the ministry’s current systems, and training users.

IBM (NYSE: IBM) concluded in the past few days a deal to install a new NIS 18 million computer system for the Israel Ministry of Defense. The new system, which will serve 1,300 work stations, includes procurement, inventory, transportation, human resources, asset management, and sales applications.

Ness Technologies (Nasdaq: NSTC) will be included in the project as a subcontractor. The project, slated for completion in early 2007, will include designing the system, installing it, integrating it with the ministry’s current systems, and training users.

Ministry of Defense computer department head Moshe Zeira said that the new computer project would be the centerpiece of the ministry’s preparations in the coming years, given the ministry’s many tasks and limited budget.

The new system is also slated to replace computer system of the Ministry of Defense’s procurement team in New York, which will be connected to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) computer systems.

The IDF C4I Directorate is expected to choose a military computer system in the near future including tens of thousands of work stations. The IDF is currently mulling the project, for which the main consideration is the cost.
