The Plants Production and Marketing Board and the Israel Flower Growers Association are launching a new initiative: a flower market, where growers will sell flowers directly to consumers. The flower market will be held every Friday for five consecutive weeks, beginning on May 20 at the Meir Park on King George St. in Tel Aviv. Kesher Faktor is producing the event, under the aegis of the Tel Aviv municipality.
Flower Growers Association secretary general Haim Hadad said different kinds of flower markets existing all large Western cities. Holding a flower market in Tel Aviv is an excellent opportunity to display flowers to the general public and attract new consumers who rarely buy flowers on a weekly basis.
Hadad said flowers would be sold more cheaply than in stores, because there would not be brokerage fees. The flowers will also be fresher, because growers will bring them directly from their farms in the morning.
Hadad hopes that after being held several weeks, the flower market will become a permanent event, similar to the flower market in Amsterdam.
The flower market will include creative workshops for flower arranging, adult and children's activities, a café and a bar. The market will be open between 9 am and an hour before the Jewish Sabbath begins.
