Dry January leaves Kinneret low

The Kinneret's water level rose by just 11 centimeters last month.

The Water Authority reported today that January 2014 was extremely dry. In some locations, it was the driest January since the Meteorological Service began measurements. Precipitation over the Kinneret was just 25% of the average for the month, and the water level rose by just 11 centimeters, to 211.28 meters below sea level on February 1.

In the Western Galilee, precipitation was 20% of the average for January, precipitation was less than 10% in the Coastal Basin, and there was almost no precipitation in the Yarkon-Taninim Basin. Nationwide, precipitation since the start of this year's rainy season is 64% of the multiyear average.

The lack of rain is also affecting the water level of the Dead Sea, which fell by eight centimeters during January to 427.90 meters below sea level on February 1. The water level fell by three centimeters in December 2013. The water level of the Dead Sea has fallen by 33 centimeters since the start of this hydrological year.
