Shanghai Jiao Tong University's latest rankings find the Hebrew University climbing three places to 67.
The Hebrew University of Jerusalem is Israel's leading academic institution according to the latest Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) compiled by China's Shanghai Jiao Tong University. The Hebrew University is ranked 67, up from 70 last year. The Technion, Israel Institute of Technology is ranked 77, up from 78, while Israel's other leading universities did not change their ranking. The Weizmann Institute of Science in Rehovot remains in the 101-150 ranking slot (no individual places are given after 100) and Tel Aviv University is ranked 151-200. Bar-Ilan University and Ben Gurion University of the Negev are ranked between 400 and 500.
The Shanghai rankings have been published every year since 2003 and rank over 1,200 universities worldwide. The criteria for the rankings include: number of Nobel Prize winners, number of research citations according to the Thomson Reuters index, number of articles published in nature and science periodicals and various other indices, and the overall number of researchers.
Universities are also ranked according to specific disciplines so that in Computer Science, the Technion is ranked 18 and Tel Aviv University 20. In Chemistry the Weizmann Institute is ranked 47 and in Economics the Hebrew University is ranked 51-75. In Engineering, the Technion is ranked 44, and in Mathematics the Hebrew University is ranked 33.
