How much does inequality cost us?

Israel Business Conference
Israel Business Conference

A special session of the Globes Israel Business Conference will be devoted to inequality.

Global inequality is growing. According to forecasts, the social gaps will worsen within a few years, with 1% of the world's population owning more property than the other 99%. As of now, more than one billion people live in absolute poverty, defined as income of less than $1.25 a day. Unfortunately, inequality in Israel is among the highest in the developed world, including in comparison with the average in Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) member countries.

What explains the rapid increase in global inequality over the past 100 years, and what is the connection between the spread and radicalization of inequality in income and economic slowdown? According to which parameters should economic equality be measured, and what tools should be used for measuring? Does wealth trickle down enough to reduce inequality and bolster growth, and if so, how?

A special session of the 2015 Globes Business Conference will be devoted to these questions, with the participation of:

Prof. Branko Milanovic, Senior Fellow, Luxembourg Income Study and Presidential Professor, Graduate Center, City University of New York.

Caroline Freund, Senior fellow, Peterson Institute for International Economics, former chief economist for the Middle East and North Africa at the World Bank, former senior economist at the International Monetary Fund, and former member of the US Federal Reserve Board.

Prof. Yossi Zeira, Economics Department, Hebrew University of Jerusalem.

Orna Amos, founder and director of the National Coalition for Direct Employment, Ben Gurion University of the Negev, member of the We non-profit organization.

Kobi Amsalem, Ministry of Finance wage department head,

Moderator: Eli Tsipori, deputy chief editor and news editor, "Globes."

The 2015 Globes Israel Business Conference will be held on December 6-7 at the David Intercontinental Hotel in Tel Aviv.
