IBA workers threaten to black out Pope's visit

Communications Minister Gilad Erdan seeks to submit the bill to close the Israel Broadcasting Authority today.

Minister of Communications Gilad Erdan seeks to introduce the bill to close the Israel Broadcasting Authority to the Knesset today, angering the Authority's employees, who have embarked on immediate protest measures.

Sources inform "Globes" that the Channel 1 engineers committee is preparing to halt public service broadcasting covering the visit by Pope Francis to Israel.

Moshe Segev, head of the Channel 1 engineering committee, told "Globes", "We have received the required approval for starting sanctions in both television and radio, and from 16:00 screens will go dark as a first step. It is inconceivable that thousands of workers should be thrown into the street and lose their jobs because of the bill that Gilad Erdan is promoting."

The next step could be disruption of broadcasting of the World Cup on Channel 1.

No response was obtainable from the Israel Broadcasting Authority.
