New Tel Aviv outline plan to double housing

Deputy city engineer Orly Arel: We are talking about 165,000 more housing units.

The Tel Aviv outline plan now under discussion at the Tel Aviv Regional Planning and Building Commission will double the number of housing units in the city, said Tel Aviv deputy city engineer Orly Arel at the annual planning and building conference hosted by Agmon Rosenberg Hacohen & Co. Law Offices at the David Intercontinental Hotel.

"Those who say that the Tel Aviv outline plan does not add a single housing unit is simply wrong and misleading. Today, 187,000 housing units are under construction in Tel Aviv, and plans that are already approved or are in the approval process will add 85,000 more units," said Arel. "The outline includes 70,000 additional housing units, not counting apartments that can be added under National Outline Plan 38 [earthquake retrofitting], and the city engineer's objections to a plan which adds another 27,000 housing units."

Arel said, "Altogether, we are talking about an additional 165,000 housing units to the housing units that now exist. In effect, the number of housing units in the city will double, not counting apartments that will be added under National Outline Plan 38. This is a huge amount, and talk about the plan not adding apartments to the city should stop."
