Plans have been deposited with the Central Regional Planning and Building Commission for objections for the building of 4,000 housing units on IDF bases which will be vacated in Ramat Gan. The plans are for 2,800 housing units at the east Tel Hashomer base, and 1,200 housing units at the IDF Adjutant General base.
The Adjutant General base is one of the five IDF bases at the heart of the plan for moving bases from central Israel to the Negev. Under an agreement signed with the Ministry of Defense and IDF, the sale of the bases land will finance the move to the Negev.
A new neighborhood, Eucalyptus, will be built on the site of the east Tel Hashomer base, along with a municipal park to save the eucalyptus trees in the area.
In a separate development, the Ministry of Defense will vacate 1,500 dunam (1,375 acres) adjacent to Ben Gurion Airport by the end of the year. Until late 2009, the area was an Air Force transport base, which was moved to the Nabatim Air Force Base in the Negev.
In a few days, the Ministry of Defense will publish a tender to complete the base's clean-up, after Air Force teams had already completed much of the work. The tender is for the sale of 1,200 tons of scrap metal and large quantities of crushed asphalt on the site, while preserving the water, sewer, electricity, and other infrastructures.
