Microbial tests revealed an exceptionally large concentration of bacteria in the products.

Unilever, which owns Telma, Israel's largest producer of breakfast cereals, has halted production of breakfast cereals because of contamination in its production line. As far as is known, the company has reported the problem to neither the Ministry of Health nor the consumers. The contamination became known because of a shortage of the company's products.

The malfunction is particularly serious. Microbial tests revealed an exceptionally large concentration of bacteria in the products, even though the products involved are not as sensitive as dairy products or chilled salads.

Unilever said, "Following questions from the media, and because of a lack of clarity, the company wishes to make clear that in the company's independent quality control, a secondary contamination was found in one of the production lines in the cereals plant that resulted in a small number of products failing to meet our company's microbial requirements. We have therefore decided on our own initiative not to market these products. It is important for us to emphasize that all our company's products in the market are completely safe to use."
