Israel Corp. delays phosphate mine opening

Israel Corp. VP Goldschmidt: We are not the dark forces.

Israel Corp. (TASE: ILCO) has delayed opening a phosphate mine near Arad. During a meeting of the Knesset environmental-social lobby yesterday, the company promised MK Michael Melchior (Labor) and Dov Khenin (Hadash) that it would not mine the phosphates if there was a risk to public health.

Israel Corp. VP communications and regulatory affairs Eli Goldschmidt said, "We're not the dark forces."

Israel Corp. took this position after the Arad municipality and Ministry of Health strongly objected to mining in the designated area. At the Knesset meeting, local representatives, the Arad municipality, and Israel Corp. agreed that the mine would not go into operation until the question of environmental damage was settled by an objective committee set up by the Knesset lobby.
