Mekorot publishes tender for Ashdod desalination plant

The new plant will produce 100-million cubic meter of water annually and is expected to be operational by the start of 2012.

Mekorot National Water Company subsidiary Mekorot Enterprises and Development Ltd. today published an international EPC (Engineering, Procurement and Construction) tender for a desalination plant in Ashdod. The plant will be able to produce 100-million cubic meter of water annually and will be a significant step in solving the country's water problems and implementation of the government's policies in this sector.

In addition, for the first time in Israel, the tender includes an option to bring in the winning bidder as a partner of a special projects company (SPC) being set up by Mekorot to run the Ashdod desalination plant, and/or the project's operating and maintenance company, with a stake of up to 40%.

The desalination plant in Ashdod is expected to begin producing desalinated water by the start of 2012.
