Gov't publishes WiMAX policy

The Communications Ministry will set up a committee to reexamine the allocation of frequencies.

The Ministry of Communications today published its WiMAX policy. As reported by "Globes," the Ministry has proposed only one frequency band at this stage, which it believes will meet current demand. This is due to the difficult economic conditions in the marketplace, which it expects to limit local demand.

Both MIRS Communications Ltd., which until a few months ago was considered the leading candidate for marketing the new technology and 012 Smile.Communications Ltd. (Nasdaq:SMLC; TASE: SMLC) have expressed doubts about demand for WiMAX in recent months, and no long see the new technology and the Ministry of Communications tender as a top priority.

Following the publication of the WiMAX policy, and after the formation of the new government, a new committee will be set up to examine the allocation of frequencies. The frequencies committee will be empowered to decide on changes to the allocations, because the situation in the market has altered and past instructions may no longer be relevant.
