Nuance moves closer to closing down in Israel

Only a few employees are likely to remain at the local R&D center.

Sources inform ''Globes'' that Massachussets-based Nuance Communications Inc. (Nasdaq: NUAN) has taken more measures toward closing down its R&D center in Israel, which was established through its acquisition of start-ups ART Advanced Recognition Technologies Ltd. and Phonetic Systems Ltd. in 2004.

18 months ago, Nuance fired most of its Israeli staff. The remaining 20-30 employees at the R&D center are expected to be notified of additional major cutbacks, leaving only a few employees under Nir Halperin.

Nuance develops speech recognition solutions. Nuance Israel was unavailable for comment.
