Better Place talks to Renault about French network

Renault COO said Better Place will probably get the nod for French operations.

French carmaker Renault SA (Euronext: RNO) has held talks with Better Place about running its future electric-car charging network in Renault's home market of France.

Renault COO Patrick Pelata told Bloomberg, “We’re working on having it in France. Nobody else is working with this business model, so it's probably going to be with Better Place.”

Starting in 2012, drivers of electric Renault cars in Israel and Denmark will use Better Place’s roadside stations to switch depleted batteries for recharged units, or recharge their batteries in car parks, sidewalk installations and at home.

In France Better Place will face opposition from national utility company Electricite de France (EDF), which plans setting up a national electric car battery recharging network. However, Better lace President Shai Agassi said that the utility should not regard him as a competitor.
