WiMAX co Alvarion wins part in major India project

The company will share a role in the project with several other companies.

WiMAX system developer Alvarion Ltd. (Nasdaq: ALVR; TASE: ALVR) has won a part in a major WiMAX deal with Indian firm BSNL. The win was reported by another firm from India, which is also taking part in the project.

Alvarion's part in the deal can reach tens of millions of dollars.

BSNL has been planning for a while to lay out a national WiMAX network in India, and after several delays the company chose Gemini Communications as its equipment vendor. Gemini is publicly traded in India, and reported that together with a subsidiary, it won 40% of the deal, a part worth about $93 million (4.35 million rupees).

Gemini bid the lowest prices in the tender, followed by China's ZTE and Harris Startex. Alvarion's bid was the fourth lowest. ZTE, Harris Startex, and Alvarion will divide the remaining 60% of the project about $140 million altogether.

With Alvarion's bid the most expensive of the four companies, it appears that its stake will be smaller, and its revenue from the deal can range from several million to several tens of millions of dollars.

Alvarion did not respond to the report.
