Gilat Satellite expands in Latin America

The firm signed a deal to deliver a broadband communications system for a defense agency.

Satellite communications systems developer Gilat Satellite Networks Ltd. (Nasdaq: GILT; TASE: GILT) continues to expand its Latin American presence. The company said today that it has received a multi-million dollar contract to deliver a turnkey broadband communications solution for a major defense agency in Latin America.

Gilat said that the broadband satellite network will be used for border control applications.

The system, based on Gilat's SkyEdge II platform, will enable the delivery of high-speed data, video and voice applications that will serve the military's different units. Gilat will supply additional equipment as part of the turnkey solution, including solar panels.

About two weeks ago, Gilat reported that it is buying US antenna company Raysat Antenna Systems for about $25 million in cash.

In November, Gilat won a contract in Peru to deploy a Gilat SkyEdge II broadband satellite communications network. Telefonica del Peru SA will use the network at more than 3,500 rural sites nationwide.

Shares in Gilat closed on Nasdaq yesterday at $5.79, giving a market cap of $233.01 million.
