Private power producers supplied part of the electricity demand.
Electricity consumption reached a record high in the severe heat wave of the past few days. Israel Electric Corporation (IEC) (TASE: ELEC.B22) announced that electricity demand reached 10,600 megawatts at 3 pm yesterday. IEC generated 10,050 megawatts of the electricity, and private power producers and companies with contracts with IEC generated the rest.
IEC's current maximum production capacity is 10,800 megawatts. IEC predicts that electricity demand will peak today concurrent with the peak in the heat wave.
The previous peak demand was 10,200 megawatts in late January 2008. The previous summer demand peak was 10,070 megawatts on June 29, 2007.
IEC advises the public not to use high energy consuming appliances during peak demand hours between noon and 5 pm.
