Cellcom: Most customers no longer experiencing failure

"We will continue to work according to emergency procedures for at least 24 hours"

Most of Cellcom's mobile devices have returned to functioning normally, but the company continues to operate according to "emergency procedure," Cellcom Israel Ltd. (NYSE:CEL; TASE:CEL) said in a press release today.

"Since 21:32 hours, the vast majority of customers have not been experiencing a problem. However we cannot say for sure the problem is behind us," the statement said. "We will continue to work according to emergency procedures for at least the next 24 hours, during which time we will monitor the behavior of the network and investigate the incident."

Disaster occurred yesterday (Wednesday) morning at Cellcom, when a fault prevented hundreds of thousands of users from making and receiving calls. There was also a partial breakdown in the SMS service.

The breakdown apparently occurred in the system that locates customers, the HLR (Home Location Register), and so it affected customers throughout the country and not just in the center.
