Work will soon begin on the Road 6 (the Yitzhak Rabin or Cross Israel Highway) southern section from Lahavim to Shoket, north of Beersheva, Minister of Transport Israel Katz reported today.
The Ministry of Transport said that the Knesset Economics Committee had approved the extension of Road 6 northwards from Yokneam to the Somekh Interchange, north east of Haifa, at a cost of NIS 3 billion.
Both the southern and northern extensions are part of the Netivei Israel plan to bring the Negev and Galilee peripheral regions closer to the center of the country.
Part of the funding of the new northern section of Road 6 will come from the private sector.
Katz said, "Extending Road 6 northwards is part of a national network of highways and railways from Kiryat Shmona to Eilat."
