Singer Margalit Tzanani remanded on extortion charges

A police official told the court, "This is a serious case of involvement of criminal gangs in the Israeli entertainment industry."

Rishon LeZion Magistrates Court Judge Shirley Dekel Naveh today remanded singer Margalit Tzanani (Margol) for nine days on suspicion of extortion. Tzanani allegedly asked members of organized crime boss Amir Mulner to threaten her former manager Assaf Atregi in a dispute over the sharing of profits for a show by singer Omer Adam. An arbitrator subsequently determined the amount that Atregi should pay Tzanani.

Following the judge's order, Tzanani will spend the next few days at the Neve Tirtza Women's Prison and in Israel Police interrogation cells. She is accused of conspiracy to commit a crime, extortion, and threats.

A police official told the court, "This is a serious case of involvement of criminal gangs in the Israeli entertainment industry."

For the past five years, Tzanani has been a judge on "A Star is Born", the local version of American Idol.
