Former tax official David Vanunu convicted of graft

Vanunu served as the director of the Israel Tax Authority's national intelligence unit.

Tel Aviv District Court Judge David Rosen yesterday convicted David Vanunu, the former director of the Israel Tax Authority's national intelligence unit, of accepting hundreds of thousands of shekels in bribes from taxpayers.

Vanunu was convicted of accepting NIS 300,000 from Yochai Yaish, the agent for singer Koby Perez (who was a state's witness). He was also convicted of trying to extort money from Perez personally. Perez refused to pay Vanunu the amount he asked to help solve his tax problems. Vanunu was also convicted of obstruction of justice, fraud, and breach of trust.

Vanunu was acquitted of charges of extorting businessman Koby Maimon and of accepting a bribe from Kadima party director general Moshe Shchori and his wife, Adv. Dalia Shchori.
