Governor of the Bank of Israel Prof. Stanley Fischer denies that he is interested in seeking the Israeli presidency after President Shimon Peres completes his term in office in 2014. "It's no secret that I feel lucky in being a citizen of Israel and Governor of the Bank of Israel," he told the economics students forum of Tel Aviv University yesterday.
"However, as an economist for many years, I believe that the career and personal track that I have chosen does not necessarily train me to serve as the President of the State of Israel."
Media reports claimed that Fischer talked about running for president with colleagues at the Bank of Israel and in the political establishment, and that he was promoting the issue in various ways.
Fischer added, "Please allow me to deny the reports. These reports are completely unfounded. I do not know where they came from, and I hope that my remarks now will put the story to rest. I hope that this is the last time that I have to comment on this publically."
